Bertha F. Shemansky

March 25, 2022

Bertha F. Shemansky, "Buddy", 93, of Glastonbury, CT and formerly of East Windsor, wife of the late William C. Shemansky, passed away on Friday, March 25, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Hartford, CT, daughter of the late Matthew and Catherine (Pockiosczki) Sabeskis. Bertha graduated from Hartford Public High School and married in 1951. She began her working career with the State of Connecticut, where she worked for the Department of Social Services, Military Department, Department of Health, and the Connecticut Department of Transportation Bureau of Aeronautics at Bradley International Airport, retiring as Senior Secretary. Bertha was a 59 year resident of East Windsor, where she made her home and raised her family before moving to Glastonbury Health Care Center in 2020. Bertha was also a licensed hairdresser and dabbled in real estate. She volunteered time with Food Share and was active in town politics. She was very fond of nature and wildlife and was a bird watcher. Bertha enjoyed feeding and caring for the stray cats and wild critters that came to her back door in East Windsor looking for a handout; they were never disappointed. Her flower and vegetable gardens also brought her great pleasure. She enjoyed taking walks in the McLean Game Refuge in Granby, CT, as well as watching Red Sox baseball and the UConn girls’ basketball games with her late husband, Bill. Eagle watching, collecting pottery, antiquing, knitting, solving Sudoku puzzles, and “paying” an occasional visit to the CT casinos were amongst her favorite hobbies. She was very generous, volunteering her time and giving away most of her knitted creations to charity organizations. And most importantly, she was very dedicated to her husband and four children. She is survived by her son, William M. Shemansky and his wife Maria of Union, CT; three daughters, Karen Buck and her husband Edward of Somers, CT, Susan Knox and her husband Gary of Stafford Springs, CT, and Phyllis Shemansky of Ashford, CT; nine grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren; and many loved nieces and nephews. Bertha was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and a friend to all. She was a very caring and compassionate person who will be sadly missed by all who were blessed to have known her. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Connecticut Humane Society, 701 Russell Road, Newington, CT 06111. Funeral services are private, per request of the family. Introvigne Funeral Home, Inc. has care of the arrangements. To leave a condolence online for the family, please visit: www.introvignefuneralhome.com
