Edward L. Courtright

Edward “Eddie” Courtright, a man whose laughter was contagious and whose spirit lifted everyone around him, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 63 on July 17, 2025 at Yale New Haven Hospital, following a heroic, long-term heart health journey. He was born October 22nd, 1961 in Manchester, CT, son of the late Edward Courtright and Marilyn (Mullin) Courtright. He was raised in Vernon, CT and graduated from Rockville High School. Eddie is survived by his beloved wife of 28 years, Debra (Christensen) Courtright, his son, Shane Courtright, and his brother Michael Courtright of Texas, as well as extended family in South Carolina and Maine. Eddie also left extended family members in CT, in addition to a vast number of dear friends who have been family to Eddie, Deb, and Shane over the years. At the center of Eddie’s world were Deb and Shane. Their love was the foundation of his life, and nothing brought him more joy or pride than being Deb’s partner and Shane’s dad. His eyes lit up every time he spoke about them. Eddie’s life was rich with relationships, laughter, and a hands-on kind of joy. He never met a stranger - just someone he hadn’t swapped a story with yet. His warm nature and sense of humor made him instantly approachable, and people were naturally drawn to him. Whether he was volunteering, mentoring kids, or helping those in need, Eddie made people feel seen and valued. Eddie had a real love for live music - especially when it meant relaxing at an outdoor venue with a great, local band. He was always up for a new experience, especially if it involved fresh air, a lovely view, and good friends. Whether it was a scenic drive, or just soaking in the day outside, he was happiest with the sun on his face and something new to explore. He loved the New England shoreline and had many happy memories of his time growing up with his cherished grandparents in Provincetown, MA. Over the years, Eddie enjoyed many hobbies, and was always getting into some new adventure. He loved to take day trips, and in his younger years, doing so on his motorcycle. He enjoyed walking with his two dogs, Tio and Monson, going on kayaking trips with his son, taking in plays and concerts, and going on spontaneous day trip adventures. Eddie was mechanically gifted and endlessly curious. If something could be built, fixed, or improved, Eddie would figure it out. He poured that passion into countless projects around the house and tinkering around the garage. Some of his favorite moments were spent side by side with Shane, working on projects or simply sharing time together. He passed on not just skills, but a sense of creativity, resilience, and joy in every moment. Though his health presented many challenges over the years, Eddie remained incredibly positive and motivated, even in the face of adversity. His determination never wavered, and he maintained his contagious joy regardless. Even during the hardest times, and stays at the hospital, he would never miss an opportunity to joke around or share a gift with his doctors and nurses. He loved to spend time getting to know the people who were taking care of him, and thanked them every chance he could get. Eddie also made space for growth. He was a mechanical plumber by trade but after health challenges, went back to school to retrain and shift his career (becoming a realtor for a time period), and attended classes at Manchester Community College in the field of physical therapy, in hopes to help others who had faced medical challenges, such as he did. He will be remembered for his love of music and family, his clever hands and generous heart, his endless enthusiasm for meeting new people, and the way he made everyone feel like they belonged. Eddie truly believed life was meant to be lived fully, joyfully, and in good company - and that’s exactly what he did. To know Eddie was to hear his familiar parting word “Tootles”, a small, joyful signature that reflected his lighthearted approach to life. Deb and Shane would like to thank the caring team at Yale New Haven Hospital for their ongoing expertise, compassion, and kindness. Their support made an impactful difference over the past few years. A celebration of Eddie’s life will be held on September 27th at Crystal Pond Park in Eastford, CT (Woodstock Valley, CT) at 2:00 pm, with a time of sharing memories beginning at 2:30 pm. We’ll come together to remember Eddie with stories, laughter, and love. Following, will be a time for socializing, just as Eddie had always enjoyed. Guests are invited to stay and visit through 6:30 pm. Light fare will be served.
