Desr Eichorn Family and Friends,
I served as the army medic with LT Alvin in Vietnam. I connected with Al a couple of years ago. I was wounded after 6 months and evacuated to Japan, then United States. I never got to say goodbye. Alvin was a very respected leader. Kind, and patient. Guys would kid him about Whittier College, because of its ties to then President Nixon and the turbulence of the times. Not to offend friends of Whittier College. Alvin sent me a couple of “ me” pictures from Vietnam after our phone conversation. I tried again to reach him over the past year, and today tried again, now understanding. I am so sorry for your loss and pain. Alvin traveled all 50 states, I sure wish when in Minnesota I could have seen him.

I am just finding this obituary for your dad, and am just so sorry for your loss. I had no idea he was ill or had passed. I still miss your mom Maggi so much after having the pleasure of teaching with her for several years. I think of them both every time I drive by the house here in town. Thinking of you both. Dear Megan and David my name is Chuck Farnan and I worked with your Dad in the PEI Industry for 18 years. We would see each other at Trade Shows often and always made time to get together for dinners.
I am also the person that he hiked the Grand Canyon with in 2015. We also visited and hiked Death Valley several times. I miss him already, we stayed in touch since our retirements and spoke often since his illness.

I’m very, very sorry for your loss. Al was a Great guy and a great friend. I’ll miss him.

I met Al (and Maggi) in 1964 at Whittier College and became a Lancer Brother to Al in 1965. Five of us brothers shared a three bedroom apartment during the 67-68 school year-lots of good times!
In September, Al dropped me off at the LA induction center- little did we know he would be there about 2 months later. Our paths crossed once in training and I believe it was at Ft. Sill in Oklahoma. I was heading off to Engineer OCS and he ended up staying at Ft. Sill for Artillery OCS.
We didn’t meet again until he was off active duty and back in the LA area.
Eventually, he and Maggi moved to New England but we stayed in touch.
I was able to visit with them a few times when my work brought me to Providence RI.
Our last get together was for David and Ashley’s marriage. And, post the wedding service Al, Jim, my wife Judy and me took a trip to Cooperstown and the Baseball Hall of Fame. It was a great time together!
Al confided to me about his health situation and the way he would handle it. I was in full support and am thankful that he had Susan to travel with him.
Al and Maggi were wonderful people and I couldn’t ask for a better lifelong friendship. My wife and I will miss them but never forget them.

We first met Al through his late wife, Maggi, whom Bob had hired as a primary teacher in Tolland. We got to know each other through many get-togethers, celebrations and holidays revolving around our young children. Common threads that bonded us were adoption, Bob and Al’s military service in Vietnam, everything about education, teaching and the development of young children.
Al was a special guy and one in a million! He was always positive in actions and words.. Al had an ever-present smile and lived life to the fullest. He remained calm, cool and collected in all situations. He was a person you could look up to and was respected by everyone. Another striking attribute was Al’s caring for others. When in his presence he would center the conversation around you and your family. You could feel his warmth and love. Al was a kind and thoughtful man. He will be dearly missed by those he knew. A l ‘s memory will forever remain in our hearts. May he rest in peace after a life well-lived.

Doug and Judy Sprague met Al when he starting dating Maggi Bloom in her senior year at Whittier College. Judy was working in the Curriculum Lab at Rowland Univied School District and Maggi was doing her student teaching in the District. She came into the Lab for ideas to use during that assignment.
We attended their wedding and have been friends since but mostly long distance. We got to know Al better when we were back attending service for Maggi. And when Al came to Southern California to visit his brother Jim (passed 3/20/2025). Sometimes Al would stay with us in Long Beach, CA. and other times just join us for meals, bringing Jim along for food and lots of conversations. Doug and Al would talk about their military experiences too.
We were delighted when he introduced us to Susan. We've become good friends, sharing many of the same interests, philosophies ,laughs and love of Al.
Judy and Al did daily texting, sharing thoughts for the day, pictures of family and interesting things in their lives. He always greeted her with "Morning Sunshine".
Al's decision to live each day as he wished until he couldn't any longer was just right for him - and an example to us. He isn't hurting any longer, for which we are grateful, but his presence in our lives has left a big hole.

I am a server at Flat Pennie’s Kitchen, where Al was one of our first customers.. he quickly became a regular, he often came in by himself, he always got a red cup and a water jug, which we kept just for him after we stopped doing this for other tables. We would chat about his hiking adventures, him getting ready for the next big adventure. He’d bring in his family and grandkids when ever he got the chance, so proud of each and every one of them.. he was always quick to show us the latest pictures , or share their newest accomplishments. I’ve been a server for over 20 years, and I always say my regulars become family to me, this one hurts my heart… Al was a sweet, kind man, who always asked about me and my family, knew my boys names, and ask how they did on a big hockey game coming up. He will be missed by me and our whole staff at the restaurant, lots of love to your amazing family at this time of sorrow.
