he touched me as a boy :(
Mr. Dutton lived next to my grandparents growing up. So I sort of knew him as the man on the other side of the fence while my cousins and the Roethlein kids played on the Big Rock.
Then came high school where he was my history teacher freshman & sophomore years. Freshman year I didn’t understand what he was talking about; junior year he was my hero, and educationally his style, individuality, and authenticity made a huge impact on the way I have chosen to live my life.
I don’t believe what I’m told and investigate issues thoroughly and deeply, I challenge the status quo, I don’t care that much about what others think of me, and I love Stafford’s history. I’m so grateful for the time he spent writing his books about our town.
I still remember some of what I learned about the New Deal, serfs, and if I thought the transition from B.C. To A.D. began with the year 1 or 0. That was the first time a teacher did not give us the answer. It’s an impressive human who can make an impression like that that lasts almost 45 years!
Bruce, you will be missed. I hope the town names something after you, my vote is that the history room in the library be called: “The Bruce Dutton History Room.” All those in favor please call the first selectman: 860-684-1777. 🙏

Nancy,
Janet & I were sorry to read of Bruce's passing. It was so nice to talk to you and Bruce at gatherings at Bev & Lou's. We offer our sincere sympathy to you and your family.
RIP Mr. Dutton. You were a great U.S. History teacher.
