Derek Wayne Hemmelgarn, 45, of Coventry, CT, was born on August 30, 1973 in Fairfax, VA, and passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 20, 2018 surrounded by his family at Manchester Memorial Hospital, Manchester, CT. Derek overcame many physical challenges at birth to lead a fulfilling life at his group home in Coventry, CT. He was lovingly cared for by the staff at the group home run by Oak Hill of Hartford. Derek was pre-deceased by his mother, Trudy (Kelly) Pierce of Stafford Springs, CT. He is survived by his father, Ronald Hemmelgarn and step-mother Barbara Tierney of Suffield, CT, his brother, Mike Hemmelgarn and his wife Jillian of Easthampton, MA, his sisters, Mandy Hemmelgarn of West Hartford, CT, Marie Mueller and her husband Zack of Portland, ME, and Carrie Hemmelgarn of Suffield, CT, his nieces, Addison Hemmelgarn of West Hartford, CT, and Nora Mueller of Portland, ME, and his nephew, Calvin Mueller of Portland, ME. Survivors also include his grandmother, Marcella Hemmelgarn of Coldwater, OH, his extended step family, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. A calling hour will be held on Friday, October 26, 2018 from 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. with a funeral service to take place at 12:00 P.M. at Introvigne Funeral Home, Inc., 51 East Main St., Stafford Springs, CT. Burial will follow at Stafford Springs Cemetery, Stafford Springs, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions for Derek may be made to Oak Hill, 120 Holcomb St., Hartford, CT 06112-1589.
