Gary R. Lipstreu's Obituary
Gary R. Lipstreu, 81, of Ashford, Connecticut, passed away at his home on Saturday, July 18, 2026.
Born in Berea, Ohio, Gary was the beloved son of the late Carl and Mary (Frawley) Lipstreu. Throughout his life, he was known for his unwavering work ethic, kindness, and dedication to both his family and his passions. He was equally remembered for his quick wit, legendary sense of humor, and trademark sarcasm. Those who knew him best understood that behind every well-timed sarcastic remark was genuine affection and a heart that cared deeply for the people in his life.
Gary spent many years working as a retail manager, earning the respect of colleagues and customers alike through his commitment, integrity, and strong work ethic. Following his retirement from retail management, Gary began a second career at Edwin O. Smith High School, where he found great fulfillment working with students. There, he provided support and guidance to countless young people, using his patience, wisdom, and genuine ability to connect with others to inspire and make a lasting difference in their lives. His compassion, understanding, and respect for every person he encountered left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
While Gary took great pride in his work, his greatest passion was the dogs he loved and the friendships he formed through the sport of showing. For countless years, he dedicated himself to exhibiting his beloved four-legged friends, celebrating their accomplishments and treasuring the special bond they shared. Whether ringside with fellow exhibitors or at home with the dogs he loved so dearly, Gary found immense joy, purpose, and fulfillment in a passion that enriched his life in countless ways. There is no doubt that Gary’s journey across the Rainbow Bridge was met with the wagging tails and unconditional love of the many beloved pups who had been waiting to welcome him home.
Above all, Gary was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Bonnie (Prescher) Lipstreu; his three children, Sean Lipstreu and his wife, Kelly, Timothy Lipstreu, and Brynn Lipstreu and her partner, Kevin Barrow; his four grandchildren, Chelsea Jordan and her husband, Jacob, Kyle Lipstreu and his wife, Meredith, Emily Barrow, and Charlotte Lipstreu; his great-grandson, Sterling Jordan; and his two brothers, Terry Lipstreu and his wife, Sandy, and Ed Lipstreu. Gary's love, wisdom, quiet strength, sarcasm and unwavering support will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In accordance with Gary's wishes, no services will be held. True to his nature—and in what those who knew him will recognize as his final Irish goodbye—he slipped away quietly, leaving behind a lifetime of treasured memories, enduring friendships, and the love of his family. Gary would want each and every person whose life he touched to embrace each day and make the most of the time they are given. He would encourage those who knew and loved him to find joy in life’s simple moments, cherish time with family and friends, laugh often, keep a healthy sense of humor (and a whole bunch of sarcasm), and continue creating memories that will last a lifetime.
