Gertrude P. Crompton's Obituary
Gertrude “Gert” P. (Rioux) Crompton, 86, of South Windsor, and formerly of Stafford Springs, passed away on Tuesday April 12, 2016. She was born in Fall River, MA on July 10, 1929 to the late Leo and Bertha (Pelletier) Rioux. She lived in Fall River until after her marriage to Albert Crompton, Jr. (deceased) when they moved to Connecticut and started their family. She worked many jobs in her lifetime: waitressing, making envelopes, working in a UConn cafeteria, school crossing guard and finally retiring as a Postal Clerk in the Stafford Springs office. Gert loved to play board, word, and card games with her children, grandchildren and anyone who visited. Everyone who knew her learned to play Kings in the Corner. She was an excellent seamstress and a fan of Stafford and UConn athletics. You would find her cheering on her children, grandchildren and their friends at soccer, baseball, softball, and basketball games. She also served as a Girl Scout leader. She loved to read, especially romance novels, and do Hidden word puzzles. One of her favorite things was to cook Sunday dinner for her family and whatever friends needed a place to enjoy a meal. Her rule was the first time you come to dinner you’re a guest, the next time you help with the dishes. She also always had a cat or two around the house. She is survived by her children, Donna Crompton of South Windsor, David Crompton and his wife Vicki of Hamden and Dana Crompton and his wife Penny of Newington; two grandchildren, Brian Crompton and his wife Lisa of Boston and Michael Crompton and his wife Kelly of Tolland; and four great grandchildren, Annabelle, Andersen, Alexandra, and Evan. She also leaves her nephew, Walter Laskow, Jr. and Kathy Symonds, niece, Denise Laskow and her husband Mark Frankinberger; two sisters, Connie (Donald) Latinville and Irene (Claudette) Norris; a brother Ernest Rioux and his wife Ethel; and many other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Leo and Bertha Rioux; her husband, Albert Crompton, Jr.; and her sisters, Jean, Yvette, Cecile and Pauline, and their husbands Ray, Norman, Eddie and Walt. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Edward Church, 55 High St., Stafford Springs, CT. Burial will follow in Stafford Springs Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, and because of her love for children, donations may be made to Hartford County 4-H Camp, c/o Elsie Woolam, 1225 Main Street, South Windsor, CT 06074, or South Windsor Young Life Area #CT-55, 13 Ivy Lane, South Windsor, CT 06074 www.younglife.org, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
