Dear Roy and Arthur,

I was deeply saddened to learn of Grace's passing yesterday. There are still several of us in the Biology Department who worked with Grace and have very fond memories of her. When I first came to teach at Eastern in January of 1978, I soon realized that Grace was someone who's advice I greatly respected and I went to her often to just "talk." I have thought of her many times in the years since she retired and I know I will continue to do so. Please accept my deepest sympathies and take comfort in the fact that Grace was an exceptional individual who touched the lives of many colleagues and hundreds of students.

I am sorry to learn of Grace's passing. She was a bright and lovely woman--and a stickler for correct English grammar-- whom I have remembered fondly and often during my career as a biomedical writer and editor. Each time I review a manuscript containing a phrase such as "Table 3 shows..." or "This paper examines..." I remember Grace chiding a student or colleague with reminders that, "Tables are inanimate. They can't SHOW anything. Things are "contained" or "shown" in Tables." or, "Papers are paper. YOU do the examining, then write about it in your paper." Grace love of the English language lives on in me, and no doubt in many others fortunate enough to have been instructed or edited by her.

Dear Roy and Arthur:
I was shocked to see Grace's obituary; I had thought that I would see her again before this. We taught together at ECSU before I left in 1970. I always liked her and knew that she was one of the very best professors ever to teach at Eastern. I will treasure her notes to me, where we would plot together about various events and discuss people, places, and things. Grace was a treasure, not likely to be eclipsed in this life. I will miss her greatly.

I was so sorry to read about Grace's death in tonight's paper. We shared many long talks over a 25 year span as colleagues at ECSU. Grace was the type of no-nonsense teacher who had high expectation from her students and rightly so. Since we had many of the same students we would get together to discuss common problems and ways to get students motivated. It was always a pleasure to discuss topics of mutual concern and our shared chemistry background made this easy to do even though we were members of different departments. She tried very hard to instill good lab practices in her students and sloppy work was not looked upon kindly. I was fortunate to have her as a colleague when I first started teaching as she freely gave me advice and help when I had biology questions. While the poorer students did not appreciate her demands for quality work, the better ones uniformly appreciated her wide breadth of practical knowledge and its applicability to real situations they might come to face in the real world after graduation.
