Irving H. Smith's Obituary
Irving “Irv” H. Smith, 71, beloved husband of Christine (Waniewski) Smith for 48 years, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 15, 2015, at Evergreen Health Care Center. A lifelong resident of Stafford, he was born on April 21, 1943, son of the late Harvey and Esther (Hathaway) Smith. Irv was a highly respected businessman who was the past owner and operator of Smith Motor Sales and Hometowne Antiques and Collectibles. He was an avid NASCAR, NY Yankees and UCONN Women’s Basketball fan, and he loved the beach and trips to the casino. Deep sea fishing was his passion. Irv was a great cook and the more people around the table the happier he was. He enjoyed making jams and relishes which he gladly shared with family and friends. The best times in Irv’s life, beyond all doubt, were when he was surrounded by his family, especially his grandchildren who brought true joy to his life. He was a humble, generous, non-judgmental man who truly understood the value of friendship. Irv took to heart the advice of an elderly friend who once told him, “If you are ever given the choice of having a million dollars or one good friend, always choose one good friend”. There are many who Irv was proud to call “friend”. He will always be lovingly remembered by Chris and his children, his son, Michael Smith and his wife, Amity, and his daughter, Audra Lauf and her significant other Michael Dumas; his cherished grandchildren Michaela and Alexandra Lauf, and Camden and Brodie “Little Harv” Smith, all of Stafford Springs; his sister, Nancy Driscoll, of Groton; his brother, David Smith and his wife, Jean, of Stafford Springs; an aunt, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and many dear friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his nephew, Scott Driscoll. Irv’s family extends heartfelt thanks to Drs. Masih, Parikh, Thompson and Thumar plus the staffs of Johnson Memorial Hospital and Evergreen Health Care Center for their care and compassion during Irv’s health challenges. Services will be private. Those wishing to honor Irv’s memory may do so by making a donation to the Irving Smith Grandchildren’s Education Fund, c/o Stafford Savings Bank, P.O. Box 25, Stafford Springs, CT 06076. Introvigne Funeral Home, Inc., Stafford Springs, CT, has been entrusted with his arrangements.
