John was one of the coolest characters I have ever known. Didn't hang out with him because I was a freshman and what upper classman wants to hang with a frosh? I was a sophomore sitting on the varsity bench with Fran Lavalley, Dave Trombly and Mel Lyford while John, Scott Wright, Dave Herres, Dan & Art Moulton and Rich Porter got beat in the playoffs against West Rutland High, I think, early march, 1970. I remember John bringing the ball up, with the leg wrapping unraveling and the sports announcer saying, "Here comes Choo-Choo Wiggett!" At 6'4" he was as coordinated as, say, anybody under six feet, and he should have played hoops at St. Michael's College, but alas....I should have played more than one year at Johnson State.
John, the Herres brothers, the Gaudreau brothers, Rich Porter and Pete Boyles were master high dive artists during those great summers at the Northfield swimming pool. They performed gainers, backflips, double flips, reverse flips, and lots of other stuff I was very impressed with, but could never do. He was always kind to me, maybe he was just humoring me, when I was obsessively playing basketball on the outdoor courts, he and the other upper classmen came down to shoot around. He and Paul Pierce used to call me "Cheesie," my father's nickname. I wish I could have seen him again. Doing laps around the field for NHS soccer coach, Mr. Carr, and we're joking about "Belvidere! Come here, Belvidere!" from an arcane Bugs Bunny cartoon. You had to be there, of course. God bless you, John!
Our prayers to you all. Bruce and Paula (Murphy) Morgan
My sincere condolences to all. Will never forget the basket ball games we had at the Wiggett home until all hours of the night, and Mrs Wiggets home made bread, if John would share! Lol.
All my best Brian Holt
