Joseph L. Szall's Obituary
Joseph “Joe” L. Szall, 97, of Ocala, FL, passed away on April 26, 2017. He was a long-time resident of Willington, CT before moving to Ocala, FL within the past year. He was born in Ashford, CT, son of the late Frank and Mary (Szabo) Szall. He was part of our county’s “greatest generation” as described by Tom Brokaw. When called, he enlisted in the United States Army and served from June 10, 1943 to January 5, 1946. He was assigned to the 166th Engineer Combat Battalion seeing action in northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and central Europe. Upon returning from war, he worked at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft as an electrician until he retired. His pastimes were gardening, working outside, especially enjoying working with wood in the forest surrounding his home and volunteering at St. Philip the Apostle Church. He touched us all with his gentleness and compassion. His grandson wrote, “A true man of God, he was kind, caring and always willing to help, and stood for what was right. He loved his family and was greatly loved by them. He walked the path most of us only aspire to”. Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Frances (Hnath) Szall; four children, Joseph P. Szall and his wife Karen, Daniel Szall and his wife Deborah, Joyce Gerardi and her husband William, and Laurie Martyniak; five grandchildren, Jonathan, Shane, Jennifer, Kari, and Taylor; and four great grandchildren, Brady, Alexis, Logan, and Summer.
