Lawrence "Larry" Becker's Obituary
Lawrence “Larry” Becker, 100, of Willington, CT, husband of the late Dina (Carocari) Becker, passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2024. He was born in Willington, CT, the youngest of six children, son of the late Henry and Tekla (Losiak) Becker. Larry served our country honorably in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. After his service, Larry worked running heavy equipment for local contractors. He began his own business in 1948, Becker Construction Company. He developed a hard rock quarry in the early 1970’s and started Ace Equipment Sales, Inc., a company that buys and sells heavy equipment, in 1973. From the years 1952-1963, Larry was First Selectman of Willington. He was proud of the number of miles of road the Town built during those years. He has been a quiet and often anonymous supporter of many local causes. He served on a local bank’s Board of Directors, on a local hospital’s Board of Directors, and was proud to be a Mason and a Shriner. He and his wife also donated the land that became the home of the Willington Public Library. After a lifetime of hard work, Mr. Becker semi- retired in 2018 at age 95. He had numerous catch phrases, notably “the harder I work the luckier I get”, and with a twinkle in his eye, “I hate fun”. Larry is survived by his daughter, Diane Becker and her husband John Patton; special niece, Patricia Amidon; special caregiver, Margaret Nah; and several other nieces, nephews and their children. He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Frank Becker (WWII), Henry Becker, Bette Ann Becker, Blanche Becker Vosseler, and Adela Becker Amidon; and niece, Georgia Becker Rondeau. Burial in Willington Hill Cemetery, Willington, CT, was held March 27, 2024. Donations in Larry’s name may be made to the Willington Public Library, 7 Ruby Rd., Willington, CT 06279, Willington Hill Fire Department, 24 Old Farms Rd., Willington, CT 06279, or to Willington Fire Department #1, P.O.
