Our neighbor down the road, Merle was strong and beautiful. She raised her five children to be the same. She raised corn that turned into corn roasts by the upper pond on hot summer days. She planted a variety of beautiful lilies by the middle pond. She was an accomplished seamstress, sewing school clothes for her girls and colorful shifts for her dates with her husband. She loved dogs and horses. She had a beautiful smile and an infectious laugh. She was a bright star in my childhood.
