Ralph E. Hughes' Obituary
Ralph Edward Hughes, 80, of Stafford Springs, CT, passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2025 in the comfort of his home. He was born in Southington, CT, son of the late Charles and Helen (McGrail) Hughes. Ralph was a United States Air Force veteran having served during the Vietnam era. He was passionate about many things: his family, politics, and treating people with dignity. He worked for the State of Connecticut for 24 years, in a variety of positions and locations. This phase of his life culminated in his position as the Deputy Commissioner for the Department of Children and Youth Service. He loved so much about his 20 years in Arizona, his friends, the companies he created, the adventure, the beauty, and he loved his return to Connecticut and his “Shangri-la” home with his chickens, bees, ducks, rabbits, and goats. Ralph was larger than life. He loved sailing, reading, traveling, and Patsy Cline. His presence and energy have left an impact on so many. He was loved dearly, and will be sorely missed. Ralph is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Susan Marie Hamel; son, Paul E. Hughes; grandson, Brennan Moriarty; sisters, Rosemary Hughes and Geraldine Vinez; brothers, Wilbur, Peter, George, and Timothy Hughes; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Simon Hughes. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM, with a prayer service to take place at 12:00 PM, at Introvigne Funeral Home, Inc., 51 East Main St., Stafford Springs, CT. Burial in Agawam Center Cemetery, Agawam, MA, will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hartford Healthcare at Home, c/o Department of Philanthropy, P.O.
