Dear Amanda and the entire Jellen family,

Oh, how Bob will be missed here in Willington. I had the honor of serving on the Scholarship Foundation with him for many years, in which we were able to rekindle a friendship that went all the way back to East Street in the 50s. Bob's parents and my grandparents lived nearly across the street from each other and were friends from way, way back. Bob also loved my Scottish mother in love, and asked about her every time we met. Isabel is gone now, too, but the wonderful memories remain.

Bob Jellen, always known as "Mr. Jellen" in the O'Neill household back in the 1970s – 80s, was a wonderful teacher and friend to me and my eight brothers and sisters, most or all of whom were fortunate to be in his 7th grade social studies/history class at Tolland Middle School a.k.a. TMS.

Bob left his positive mark on so many kids and families during his 37 years of teaching in Tolland. Even after I went to UCONN and then to law school in Boston, I was fortunate to stay in touch with Bob, more recently by running into him at funerals and reunions.

I was so happy that Bob attended the THS 1980-81 40th reunion held at "The Spot" in November, 2021. It was great to catch up with him that night, and to see him happily engaging with many of his former students. Anyone who ever had the pleasure of Bob's company, whether as a student, co-worker, friend or some other fortunate citizen, benefitted greatly from the experience. Bob humbly and generously exposed those whom he encountered with a better understanding of the world around us. He was a just peach of a fellow, who will remain in my heart forever. --Owen O'Neill

Robert Jellen was just beginning his teaching career at TMS when my sister and I were fortunate enough to have him for social studies. Bob was so passionate about history and making the classroom learning fun and interactive for the students. I still recall many of his talks and lessons from 55 years ago. He made an impact. Recently I was traveling thru Boston and Mr, Jellen's readings about the Revolutionary War piped into my thoughts as i traveled thru those surrounding towns. Mr. Jellen also was intune with current ecents, and as the Vietnam war raged on in this time, he encouraged his students to be aware and involved. I recall in his class he would have the copper and silver POW/MIA bracelets available for purchase. Reading about his life it appears that he kept true in his passions and teachings. I never was insomuch with him again after 7th grade but I did think of him often and now as a retired senior citizen fully appreciate and realize the wonderful teacher and person that he was and wanted to share this with his family.

Bob and I were classmates from Elementary School to High School and you could not ask for a better person to be with a smart, intelligent gentleman all the way along with being kind to all. Bob may you rest in the hands of the Lord for eternity. 🙏

So very sorry to get this news. Bob was my mentor at Tolland Middle School and we worked together for 16 wonderful years. He was a terrific member of a stellar staff at TMS, He had an outstanding relationship with students and staff. Rest in peace dear friend and colleague.
