James J. Smith's Obituary
James J. Smith of Union, Connecticut, 73, passed away at his home December 24, 2023. Jim graduated from Dartmouth College and completed the course work for a master’s degree in oceanography at the University of Rhode Island. For over twenty years he was very active in local politics. A varied intellect, he went on to teach physics, oceanography, geoscience, and security education. He was intensely interested in naval history and, through his constant reading, achieved a most comprehensive store of knowledge. He was a champion of our Constitution and Bill of Rights, and a steadfast believer in the personal responsibilities of maintaining a free and equal society. A truthful, thoughtful man of kind heart, Jim will be missed. He is survived by cousins, William Holland of Albion, Maine; MaryJo Johnson of Beech Creek, Pennsylvania, and Frank Johnson of Williamsport, Pennsylvania. A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2024 from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM at the Congregational Church of Union Palmer Parish Hall, 976 Buckley Highway, Union, CT.
