Memories of Uncle Ray: My Hero, My Inspiration
By Brenda Bednar
12.23.2011
It occurred to me this morning that there was so much I want to say about my Uncle Ray… about all the ways he touched me and my life – as my uncle, as my godfather, as a fellow firefighter, as a role model… and as the inspiration for all that I’ve achieved in my life.
I thought about what to say today – to honor a great man who defined himself better than any of us together can do.
It is at this moment when we share our memories of Raymond – a time when we try to keep him close to us, even as he is stepping away and moving forward on his journey.
He is my uncle, my godfather, a role model and my inspiration.
When I was very small, I have vague memories of running to the front door when the big red trucks came speeding by the house with sirens blaring and the men who I thought were angels from Heaven sent down to us when people were in danger. I never saw these firemen at any other time, so I was certain these were real live Angels sent to save us in our time of need.
In a way, I guess I was right even at the age of four.
When I was four years old I learned that these men were not Angels from Heaven, but men who chose to dedicate their lives racing to the aid of their neighbors when needed.
I was in awe that these angels weren’t sent down from the sky on their shiny red trucks, but simple, proud men who served their community and neighbors with dedication, commitment, and honor.
I remember Uncle Ray sitting in our kitchen and me standing beside him staring at him in awe as I was told that HE was one of these firemen.
At that moment he became larger than life for me – and as years passed and I learned more and more about these firemen and about him, he became my Hero and my inspiration to live a life of honor and service. I said I would be a fireman too. And I was told that there were no girl firemen. I said I would be the first.

I am so sorry to hear about Ray's passing. He was a good friend of my father, Dick Brisard. Ray was always over at our house in Stafford when I was a kid. I remember him as being a very kind man. He will be greatly missed by many people. I will remember him and all his family in my prayers.
I'm so sorry that I didn't know.
I grew up living next door to the Armelin family. I had Tubby and Biddy on one side, Allen and Lori on the other side, and of course Richie too. Raymond and Nancy didn't live too far away with their families. I grew up with these people and remained friends with all of them all these years later, actually they were all part of our "neighborhood family," even though we were not related.
everytime I run into one of them, it feels like running into a part of my family, so when one passes on, it actually hurts and bothers me very much as though they are.
I remember so very many things about each of you as if it were just yesterday even though a serious number of years have passed. I remember Raymond going to his mom and dads and having Tony with him running over the front yard yelling like boys do and Ray trying to get him to quiet down but he just didn't want to. I remember Allen and Richie lecturing me about my cat stealing all of their dads bullhead out of the pail and the whole time, i was watching the cat behind their backs taking one at a time until the pail was empty. Later on i saw Ray at the store and he asked me to keep an eye on my cat. Too funny..(now anyway) I will miss running into you Ray but at least we all know that you are safe and at peace now with no more pain.
I am truly sorry for your loss and i know how much it hurts and how your life changes without them in it.
Tubby, Biddy, Allen, Raymond, I will miss you all and who knows, maybe someday we will once again have a neighborhood family.
If you want some Armelin memories, give me a yell. Love Always to you all
an old friend, Kathie
