We first met the Sfreddo family when, upon moving to Stafford in the early 1970's, Mark was invited to play on the DBN men's softball team. Such great fun at Olympic Field getting to meet the players and their spouses and kids... especially for me as I got to know Valerie. Having a son the same age as her son, we hit it off immediately, and loved that Scott and Steve became the best of friends.
Those were wonderful times of our younger years.... great memories of St. Edward's School events, Little League, basketball and football with our children. We shared many laughs...a good many of them at Italian Club meals and dances, sitting at the counter of the Station News Room, out at the lake, and most memorable - the infamous dinner club. Several times a year, a group would meet up and go out for a Saturday evening dinner... somewhat of a mystery ride at times. The laughs started from the minute we all gathered...and continued on...as we almost always were just on the edge from being asked to leave some fine dining establishments because of the antics of the crew. My most favorite memory was one holiday dinner when we were guests at Chez Pierre... and Val became so star struck at being seated right next to a celebrity of sorts - a Channel 3 anchor, that she accidentally placed her napkin in the lit candle, and started a small table fire. It was hard to be dignified and proper after that...and the entire restaurant joined in with our craziness, at poor Val's expense.... but she was a great sport.
We lost touch somewhat when they moved to Somers and she retired from town employment, but we always enjoyed those times when our paths crossed. She never failed to light up when asked about her precious grandson Aaron.
Her faith and love of family, and her courageous will to live, make up her legacy. We are truly blessed to have called her our friend.
Peter, Scott, Kim and Aaron... our sympathy and love to you.
