My sincerest sympathies to all of Bill's family. Bill was a very important professor of mine while I was a graduate student at UConn as I worked and studied in Bill and Mark Tourtellottte's lab. I have the fondest memories of time spent with Bill as both a bacteriologist and as a birder. I teach microbiology now and still use much of what Bill taught me while teaching my students. What Bill helped teach that was among the most important lessons, was that science should be fun. He and Ester Fabian and Mark Tourtellotte always made it so much fun to be there. I have thought of Bill many times over the years in the microbiology lab and while birding and I always will. I was so fortunate to have had him as a professor and as a friend.
