Growing up is a hard journey for children. We get lost and try to find our way in this big wide world. There are highs and lows and we learn from them all. We watch, observe, and take note as to how we want to be when we grow up and raise our own children. The Skinner family showed me what family was supposed to be like. They may not have agreed on everything but they were a family and that was something I never really had as a child. I watched them, learned from them, prayed with them, and through it all, I try to model my new family to their values and love for each other.
Grandpa Skinner was so scary to me when I first met him. He was tall with a thunderous voice. He spoke what he thought and wasn't afraid to tell me the rights and wrongs of his household. But beyond his larger than life presence, he was a great big teddy bear. He cared for me and my sister as if we were his own grandchildren. He took us under his wing and loved us.
Unfortunately I was never able to tell him how he really affected my life. But he is often in my thoughts and a smile always comes to my face retelling stories from my childhood. Grandpa and the Skinner family will forever have a place in my heart and their love for each other, family, and God will live on in me and continue in the family I have created with my husband.
God bless you Grandpa,
